- Reviewed in the United States on November 24, 2024I had no knowledge of either this author or The Ancestors Saga, but the blog suggested I’d enjoy it if I loved the Clan of the Cave Bears books, which of course I did. After reading this first book I can truthfully say this book is interesting and did feature a women as it’s main character and I will read book two and maybe more but not because it’s like the other series because it is not. This is a fantasy series that that is very different and good on its own.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 19, 2025Well written and a very good read. I enjoyed it far more than I thought I would. I would highly recommend to anyone who likes fantasy fiction.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 5, 2021To me, this story is more prehistoric fantasy than just fiction alone. For instance, the author has "created" a branch of human ancestors called the Ninkuraaja. They possess certain mental powers. One of their kind, Rebaa, comes to live with the Cro (Cro-Magnon). After disaster strikes, Rebaa is left pregnant and alone but receives help, along with love and friendship, with a Thal (Neanderthal) woman who also has her own past. Together, they fight against an evil Cro man who wants Rebaa for his own, because of her powers.
I really enjoyed how the Ms. Holmes blends different species together in this tale. I like how she gives them names which are shortened versions of the their actual names. One could imagine them actually being called that amongst themselves. (There's even a brief mention of the Deni, or what I can only assume is the Denisovan.)
The few things that I didn't like about the story is that the ending felt rushed. It felt like Ms. Holmes knew that she had the next part of the story to tell, in the second book, and wanted to just hurry and wrap up the ending. I also wish that she would have explained how Rebaa ended up living among the Cro, which hopefully she will touch on in the following books. The other "complaint" is that I wanted to know more about the "monsters" that cause Rebaa and her mate to end up... how they end up... (I'm trying to not include spoilers! xD) Again, I hope this is mentioned in the next book(s).
I'm a fan of books written in prehistoric times and I really and truly enjoyed this book. However, I'm not sure ALL fans of prehistoric fiction would enjoy this tale. If you like books written by Jean M Auel (Earth's Children series) or Sue Harrison (The Ivory Carver Trilogy and The Storyteller Trilogy) and don't mind some fantasy elements thrown in that doesn't necessarily follow what we know (so far) about our own prehistoric ancestors, then you may enjoy these books.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 22, 2024Good continuation of the story. I really feel for Juaan. People can be really cruel and heartless. Juaan really has a tough life but he maintains.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 18, 2023I never hardly ever see this genre - Stone-Age Fantasy. It's either one...or the other.
As for The Forbidden, I read the first couple of chapters, then put it down for several months, going to other books in my Wait to be Read pile.
Then, A couple of days ago, I came across it again, and ended up being swept away in this world. I love Stone-Age settings, but after decades of trying many, few ended up being good. I started in the 80's with Clan of the Cave Bear, then tried numerous others of its type, mostly women writers for some reason. And none captured my attention long. Too romancy for my tastes.
Then there are the twin giants of Stone-Age drama - Kathleen & Michael Gear. But thus far, I found them quite long-winded and not as satisfying as Michael Gear's terrific sci-fi series about the planet of Donovan.
So I'm glad to say that I FINALLY found a writer that captures that rarity - Stone-Age Fantasy with fast-paced storyline that has great, interesting characters and a tragic love story that is not sappy like most women writers pen their novels.
Don't get me wrong, I'm all for a solid love story. Just it not being the driving force of the novel. This is not tween romance fantasy, which I thought it was going to be as I began it. But to my surprise, and breathing a sigh of relief, I found The Forbidden quite enjoyable. It was brought with action and adventure, A sheer chase through a rugged wilderness of our ancient past.
Its got its fair share amount of flaws, but it sure is much better than numerous others of its ilk I've tried over the decades. The main character is solid, and her journey is fraught with dangers, both the animal and more so the human type. I wished there were a bit more apex predators in this book. There was a lot of travel with little to no beasts about. And since its fantasy-based, why not throw in dinosaurs into the mix? That would be insane!
Perhaps she does in the next book or so. Guess I'll have to find out...
- Reviewed in the United States on June 29, 2024What a page turner. Loved the detailed journey after the loss of rebaas husband, her fight for the survival of her and her unborn childs safety against odds that seem almost beyond human comprehension . The support and empowerment Nan gave was both heartwarming and firm showing a mother's determination and love is unending.
I am super excited to start the next book in this series
I would recommend this read to anyone and especially those who enjoys the clan of cave bear series
- Reviewed in the United States on October 27, 2024I enjoyed reading this book as Iove the series of clan of the cave bear. This one am going to pass down to my teenages, I think it would be more enjoyed by someone younger

5.0 out of 5 stars Brutal, yet beautiful
I took a chance on this book. It isn’t normally the genre I read. I was surprised how much I liked it. The characters draw the reader in, you become invested in their lives. The world building in good. The plot is interesting and brings you to the edge of your seat a number of times. The writing is great, bringing the story to life. Which at times is a little frightening. I’m glad I took the chance.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting Read
The story of Rebaas life was interesting and fast paced. An exciting and easy read. I was sitting on the edge of my seat constantly wondering what would happen next.. I think I found it unbelievable the cruelty of racism and humanity of of the clans to one another.

Intriguing start to what promises to be a riveting series. Having just finished book 1 I’m definitely going to buy the next in series.
